Title: Immigration Celebration | Welcome Home
Year: 2024
Medium: PVC, plastics, outdoor lights with sensor
Showed at: Biennale Architectures, Esch sur Alzette-Luxembourg, 2024
The Coming Home lights represent arrival. Especially an arrival in western Europe.
The work is based on an interview with immigrant Elizabeth from Cape Verde. While she reflect on her own experience she says: “The first thing I saw in Luxembourg where the lights. In the night there would be light.”
The lights in the work symbolize home, and Luxembourg. But also the concept of feasibility or malleability of life. The possibilities of creating a better life for yourself but with that also loosing part of your identity and home. And with that the idea that in some places there is no light in the night.
This celebration ‘banner’ in the work Welcome Home is based on an interview with José, a woman from Cape Verde who immigrated to Luxembourg in the 1970s. It is created at the request of the University of Luxembourg for the Esch Capitale Culturale Biennial in september 2024. The work celebrates 50 years of migration to Esch sur Alzette by Jose.
The piece reflects the challenges immigrants face in Luxembourg, in this case especially given the stark differences between Cape Verde and Luxembourg. Immigrants like José have made significant contributions through hard work and dedication, enriching the country and local communities. This work celebrates immigration and says: "We value your presence in our country and celebrate you."
