Title: Lost data of a Mackerel
Year: 2021
Medium: monitors, latex
Collaborators: Thom Kuyt
This work explores what is lost when the physical world is translated into digital data. Using photogrammetry, I created a 3D model of a mackerel. While the model captures the visual appearance of the fish, it lacks the sensory qualities that define the physical experience of encountering it: its smell, temperature, weight, wetness, and texture. The digital fish exists only as image and geometry. In the installation, the digital model is extruded beyond the surface of the screen, as if the information that could not enter the digital realm remains resting on top of it. The piece reflects on the limits of digital representation and questions the assumption that reality can be fully preserved through technological documentation and data.
